NCSLMA2020 has ended
To register for the 2020 NCSLMA conference, go to the NCSLMA website and click on the Events tab. Since our conference will be completely virtual this year, here are some things you can expect:
  • Private Facebook group for attendees. Live keynote sessions, author sessions, awards, and door prizes will be hosted in this group.
  • Exclusive access to pre-recorded videos for one year through a private page on our NCSLMA website.
  • Live sessions through Google Meet for each level of Battle of the Books.
  • General business meeting for all NCSLMA members.

Presenters will guide teachers through an interactive presentation demonstrating strategies of documentary theatre that first began with the Federal Theatre Project and have been adapted by various performers through the ages. Documentary theatre is a process of exploring the stories of local people to understand historical events. The Teaching with Primary Sources program has been working with educators at various grade levels in the area to revise this performance strategy for classroom practice. In the classroom, this teaching strategy helps students analyze texts, explore local history in the context of national events, and develop empathy for others. Participants will be guided through a mini-session of primary source exploration, script writing, and performance. They will then receive two model units: one for high school students exploring Slavery in WNC and one for elementary students exploring development of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Time will be provided at the end of our workshop to explore Library of Congress resources and build a Primary Source Set that can be used for Documentary Theatre teaching strategies with their students.
